Sam BradfordESPN/Scout's Inc. talent guru Todd McShay posted a mock draft today. (The link leads under the ESPN Insider umbrella so if you're not subscribed to that, you probably can't read the story.)
This early list points out some things to watch for if you're a Chiefs fan. At this juncture, everyone in town -- including, you would hope, Carl Peterson -- understands that the Chiefs need to invest in a franchise-caliber quarterback.
I don't know if that guy is really out there this year. Georgia's Matthew Stafford has been touted as the top guy for most of the season. Lately, though OU's Sam Bradford has talent watchers turning a little giddy.
Right now, given the Chiefs problems on and off the field, it's hard to envision them winning more than a couple of games this season. However the Lions and Bengals are both winless and neither team shows signs of winning any time soon. If the Bengals draft ahead of the Chiefs, that's no problem. Cincinnati has no problems at the quarterback position. It's the rest of the team that is a mess.
The Lions depth chart at QB, however, consists of Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton. The problem for the Chiefs is that from what I've heard, no one really expects Sam Bradford to turn pro after this season. So if you believe the gurus, this is essentially a one quarterback draft, at least in terms of franchise types.
If you're a Chiefs fan, you gotta root for your boys to keep losing and hope that the Lions can steal a couple of games somewhere along the line.

Franchise QBs? Nod toward Chickenman, "they're everywhere, they're everywhere!"
In 1979, the 49ers wanted to draft a QB, Steve Fuller...only, the KC Chiefs beat them to it by selecting Fuller in round #1. Instead, the 49ers 'settled' for a guy in round #3 named Joe Montana (the late Bill Walsh himself admitted this.) Just our dumb luck & San Fran's good.
Len Dawson was acquired on waivers...John Unitas a free agent... Bart Starr was a 17th round draft choice (meaning he would have been undrafted today.) Warren Moon was undrafted by the NFL... Tom Brady lasted until round 6.
Dawson, Unitas, Starr, Moon & Montana...Hall of Famers all.
Conversely: Dave Carr...Ryan Leaf...Dave Klingler...Andre Ware... Jeff George...KC's own double whammy- Pete Beathard AND Todd Blackledge (Dan Marino? Who needs him!)...Terry Baker...all said (and I can augment with many, many more) former 1st round draft choices, #1 overall picks in the entire draft and/or high #1 picks - who all fell down and went boom.
KC's only BUT (and, to quote Pee Wee Herman's plea to Simone in 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure' of "let's talk about your big ..." makes it a big one) IS... Carl Peterson - the anathema to young QBs, & KCs QB 'guru', Dick Curl, dynamic duo the midwest.
Between a rock(head) & a hard (member) place nee a Carl & a Curl, the Chiefs are f****d; those two have about as much chance of locating a young QB of substance and delivering him safely to shore nee the Chiefs roster as a f@rt in a whirlwind has a chance of success.
But rest assured, likely there is one (or more) good QB(s) out there to be had...LOL fellow Chiefs fans.
