Broken RecordBroken Record in more ways than oneAfter Bannister’s game, I admitted that I was sounding like a broken record, but fair is fair. Gil Meche just pitched the best game of his career on Tuesday night. That follows up his best game as a Royal in his last start. He threw a personal record 132 pitches and he now has 16 scoreless innings pitched. He has allowed only one earned run in the last 22 innings and has gone six consecutive starts by allowing two earned runs or less!

Before this recent run, his ERA was 4.60. During the last six games his ERA is 1.69. He’s struck out 29 and given up one home run. That’s starting to look similar to Greinke’s beginning of the season.

As I mentioned before, the best way to measure an individual game performance by a pitcher is Bill James’ “game score”. I’ll go ahead and give the breakdown of how it works again in case you missed it.

The exact formula is (from Baseball Reference): GmSc (Game Score) – Start with 50 points. Add 1 point for each out recorded, (or 3 points per inning). Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th. Add 1 point for each strikeout. Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed. Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed. Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed. Subtract 1 point for each walk.

You had a world-class game if you were anywhere near 90, a great game if you were around 80 and almost certainly a win at 70. I’ve got three tables to show you.

MECHE AS A ROYAL

The first is Meche’s best pitching performances as a Royal. You will notice that Tuesday night’s is now easily #1.

Next, I thought it would be interesting to show his career best games. Tonight’s game is an all-time high for him. The previous top four were with Seattle in 2006 or earlier. Last Wednesday night’s was his sixth best ever.

And finally, the obvious next question anyone would ask is where his 84 ranks in 2009 for the Royals? Meche now has the third and seventh best performances of the season.

So, there you have it. How many pitchers this far along in their career have back-to-back performances so good relative to their many other starts? Ok, that was rhetorical. I don't know the answer.
